As a professional garment bag manufacturer specializing in home storage products including quilt bags and storage boxes, we know that proper cleaning and maintenance is the key to extending the service life of a garment bag. Different materials of garment bag have different physical properties, so the cleaning methods and maintenance skills are also distinct. Wrong cleaning ways will damage the fabric structure, reduce the protective performance of the garment bag, and even cause deformation, fading or damage. A well-maintained garment bag can better protect your suits, dresses and precious clothing from dust, wrinkles and moisture for a long time. Below we will detail the professional cleaning and maintenance methods for garment bag made of four mainstream materials: non-woven fabric, polyester, cotton and PVC, all tips are summed up from our factory's production and quality inspection experience.

How to Clean & Maintain Non-woven Fabric Garment Bag

Non-woven fabric is the most common material for basic household garment bag, which is lightweight, breathable, economical and has good dust-proof effect, it is the first choice for daily closet storage of ordinary clothes and suits.

★   Cleaning Method

Non-woven fabric is a bonded fiber material with loose texture, it can not be washed with water (machine wash or hand wash) - water washing will make the non-woven fabric delaminate, harden, shed lint and lose its original shape completely, and the damaged fabric can no longer protect clothes from dust.

   ●   Daily light cleaning: Wipe the surface of the non-woven garment bag with a clean dry soft cloth to remove surface dust, this is the most common and safe cleaning way.

   ●   Local stain cleaning: For small oil stains or dirt on the surface, dip a soft cloth in a small amount of mild neutral detergent diluted with water (ratio 1:10), gently wipe the stained area, then wipe the detergent residue with a clean damp cloth, and place the garment bag in a well-ventilated place to air dry completely (avoid direct sunlight).

★   Maintenance Tips

Do not rub or scrub the non-woven fabric hard, it is easy to cause fiber breakage.

After cleaning and drying, fold the garment bag flat and put it into a storage box to avoid long-term hanging and stretching deformation.

Non-woven garment bag is not waterproof, avoid placing it in humid places such as bathroom to prevent mildew.

How to Clean & Maintain Polyester Garment Bag

Polyester (polyester fiber) is the core material of travel and business garment bag, and it is also the best-selling material of our garment bag manufacturer. Polyester garment bag has the advantages of tear resistance, water resistance, wrinkle resistance and light weight, it is widely used for business trip portable garment bag and outdoor travel suit storage bags, and it is the most durable material among all garment bag fabrics.

★   Cleaning Method

Polyester fabric has strong dirt resistance and is very easy to clean, machine washable and hand washable, both are available, and it is not easy to deform after washing.

   ●   Daily light cleaning: Wipe the surface with a damp cloth, the dust and light stains can be easily removed; the waterproof polyester garment bag can even be rinsed directly with clean water.

   ●   Deep cleaning: For heavily soiled polyester garment bag, use mild neutral laundry detergent (do not use bleach, disinfectant or alkaline detergent), wash by hand with cold water or put it into the washing machine for gentle cycle. After washing, rinse thoroughly to remove detergent residue, then hang it in a cool and ventilated place to air dry naturally.

Important Note: Do not use a dryer or iron on polyester garment bag. High temperature will melt the polyester fiber, cause the fabric to harden and shrink, and damage the waterproof coating on the surface of the travel garment bag.

★   Maintenance Tips

The metal zippers and hanging hooks of polyester garment bag can be wiped with a dry cloth after cleaning to prevent rust; apply a little beeswax to the zipper if it is stuck, which can keep it smooth.

Polyester garment bag can be folded at will for storage, and the fold marks will disappear automatically after unfolding, which is very suitable for matching with our foldable storage boxes for travel and home use.

How to Clean & Maintain Cotton Garment Bag

Cotton garment bag is a high-grade fabric choice for luxury clothing storage, it is soft, breathable, skin-friendly and non-abrasive, and is specially used to protect delicate fabrics such as wool suits, silk dresses, cashmere coats and wedding gowns. As a professional garment bag manufacturer, we use pure natural combed cotton for our cotton garment bag, which has better air permeability and softness, and is the best choice for long-term high-end clothing storage.

★   Cleaning Method

Cotton fabric has good water absorption, but it is easy to shrink, fade and deform when exposed to high temperature and strong alkali, hand wash is preferred, gentle machine wash is acceptable.

   ●   Hand wash (recommended): Soak the cotton garment bag in cold water with mild neutral detergent for 5-10 minutes, gently press and knead the stained parts with your hands (do not rub hard), rinse with clean water until there is no foam, then squeeze out the excess water gently (do not twist hard, it will cause serious deformation and creases).

   ●   Machine wash: Put the cotton garment bag into a laundry bag, select the delicate cycle/cold water cycle of the washing machine, and avoid mixing with hard clothes such as jeans to prevent friction and pilling.

Drying: Lay the cleaned cotton garment bag flat on a drying rack to air dry naturally, or hang it with a wide hanger to avoid stretching deformation of the shoulder and hook parts. If ironing is needed (to remove creases), use a low-temperature iron (≤110℃) and iron the reverse side of the fabric.

★   Maintenance Tips

Avoid long-term exposure to direct sunlight, the ultraviolet rays will make the cotton fabric fade and become brittle.

For long-term storage, put a small amount of cedar chips in the cotton garment bag to repel moths, and store the bag in a dry storage box to prevent mildew.

Cotton garment bag is not waterproof, it is only suitable for indoor closet storage, not for travel and outdoor use.

How to Clean & Maintain PVC Garment Bag

PVC (plastic vinyl) garment bag is a classic waterproof and dust-proof storage bag, it is transparent, low-cost, easy to clean, and is widely used for short-term storage of suits, coats and household clothing. PVC garment bag has excellent waterproof and dust-proof performance, and can clearly see the clothes inside, which is convenient for sorting and taking.

★   Cleaning Method

PVC is a smooth plastic material with a dense surface, it is not easy to absorb dirt, it CAN NOT be washed with water for a long time, dry wipe/light wet wipe is enough. Long-term water washing will make the PVC material brittle and crack, and the edge glue will fall off.

   ●   Daily cleaning: Wipe the surface of the PVC garment bag with a dry soft cloth or paper towel to remove dust, which can keep it clean.

   ●   Stain cleaning: For oil stains, fingerprints or stubborn dust on the surface, dip a soft cloth in a small amount of diluted neutral detergent or alcohol, gently wipe the stained area, then wipe it dry with a clean dry cloth immediately. For frosted PVC garment bag, use a soft sponge to wipe to avoid scratching the surface and affecting transparency.

   ●   Important Note: Do not use corrosive cleaners (such as bleach, glass cleaner) to clean PVC garment bag, they will corrode the PVC surface and cause yellowing and cracking.

★   Maintenance Tips

PVC is sensitive to high temperature, avoid placing the PVC garment bag near heaters, radiators or in direct sunlight, high temperature will make the PVC material soften, deform and stick together.

When folding and storing, avoid sharp creases, fold along the soft crease of the bag body, which can prevent cracking at the fold.

If the PVC garment bag is slightly yellowed after long-term use, wipe it with a little white vinegar diluted with water, which can restore a certain transparency.
